Love For All People
By Jim Burnett
In early 1993, members of the York County Business Association were discussing ways of doing good civic works in the county to enhance the image of the business community. During those discussions, several major needs were identified including a senior citizen center, a center for youth activities and a civic center for meetings. There were many other civic activities identified that would positively affect our community.
In June 1993, these same concerned businesspersons founded a charitable organization to serve the York County community. The name chosen for this organization was Caritas, a Latin word meaning, ???love for all people???. (For those interested in etymology, Caritas is a root word for charity.)
Caritas is a separate and distinct organization from the YCBA. For instance, several members of the YCBA serve as officers and directors of Caritas. Yet, members of the Caritas Board of Trustees do not always belong to YCBA.
Caritas has become a major source of financial assistance and support to many activities of our senior citizens and youth, as well as, helping families that are in dire need. The major goal of Caritas since its inception is the construction of a civic center for York County. It has been a very long and tough road, but Caritas got its big break this year when Virginia Power provided the opportunity for Caritas to purchase a superb six-acre building site in their new York River Commerce Park. Because of the largess of Virginia Power, the Caritas Civic Meeting Center is on track to become a reality in 1999.
