Playwrights Premiere Theatre was originally conceived in New York by Mary Wadkins and Robert Ruffin as a result of their collaboration on The Gathering � a play which they produced under the umbrella of Diaspora Productions, L.P. Producers of The Gathering�s premiere (off-off Broadway, 1998), Diaspora Productions continued to develop the project as it ran Off-Broadway in 1999 (Theodore Bikel) toured nationally and opened on Broadway in April 2001 (Hal Linden).
In 1999 Wadkins and Ruffin (a Virginia native) became part-time residents of Mathews, Virginia and in 2001, they created Paradise Found Productions � a Virginia-based, production-company. From 2001 to 2002, Paradise Found Productions produced seven regional productions in the Tidewater, VA area. In August of 2002, Paradise Found Productions produced �Joanna�s Husband and David�s Wife� by best-selling author Elizabeth Forsythe Hailey at the 410 seat Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg, VA. The production was staged by, Broadway director, Rebecca Taylor.
In December of 2002, Wadkins and Ruffin incorporated Playwrights Premiere Theatre as a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) theatre company dedicated to premiering New York quality theatre in Virginia and sending out into the world.
Playwrights Premiere Theatre will begin producing a fully professional season of new and under-recognized plays at The Kimball Theatre in Williamsburg, VA in September of 2003. Playwrights Premiere Theatre currently offers educational tours to universities and schools throughout Virginia as part of The Virginia Poetry Society�s �Poetry in the Schools� program and is also developing a number of regional performances to be offered in the Tidewater, VA area during the spring and summer of 2003.
