The York County Volunteer Association is a charitable, nonprofit organization with a mandate to help York County and Poquoson citizens who are in need.  At our thrift shop, The Bargain Box, customers may obtain good quality used clothing and household items at very affordable prices.

During the past year over $100,000 in assistance was given to those in need.  This was generally done by paying bills on their behalf.  In addition, about 300,000 pounds of goods not needed by The Bargain Box were given to other agencies, such as the DAV, VFW, and LINK.  In addition, $30,000 was given to the York County Food Closet.  Assistance was also given by providing fees for summer school for York County and Poquoson needy students.  Child care assistance and post-secondary scholarships totaling more than $25,000 were also given to qualified individuals.

Funds are used to provide financial assistance to families to help with child care.  Our goal is to provide low-income families with the financial resources to afford quality child care for their children.  Hopefully this will contribute to the broader objective of self-sufficiency.

Funds are provided to qualified individuals (both recent high school graduates and adults) to further their education.  The York County Volunteer Association offers York County and Poquoson citizens scholarships for adult vocational, trade school, and technical training courses that would be expected to help in obtaining improved employment.  Education/training is generally to be received in the Virginia Peninsula or Tidewater Virginia areas.  Financial support is offered pending justification.  Resources provided may include tuition, books, fees, and other items.  Preference will be given based on financial need. Over 92 percent of the proceeds generated by The Bargain Box is used to fund the services offered by The York County Volunteer Association.  There are no paid employees.

The Bargain Box provides previously owned clothing, furniture, appliances, household items such as pots and pans, drapes/curtains, blankets/bedspreads, and other linens, mattresses, small computers and small appliances and small televisions, furniture, books, games, toys, and jewelry at minimal cost.

The Bargain Box serves as a facility used to distribute needed items to families in emergency situations.

The York County Volunteer Association considers any bona fide request for assistance including help with utilities, medical bills, rent, food, transportation, child care assistance, tuition and scholarships and more.  Most of this assistance is given on a one-time basis.  However, clients are also referred to programs to assist with more long-term care.  Please note:  All requests for assistance are initiated by calling our Hot Line at 886-1520 and leaving a contact number and message.

One of the components of The Bargain Box ministry is to serve as an outlet for the distribution of clothing and household goods.

For York County and Poquoson citizens, such as victims of fire or floods, who cannot afford to purchase items and for those who are making the transition from homelessness, items are provided free of charge.

Yearly, several hundred families or individuals receive assistance either in monetary support or through receipt of clothing/goods at no cost.  For families with limited income, The Bargain Box offers an economical alternative to shopping at a mall and retail stores with an added bonus--profits from the store sales go directly to support our many programs and services.

The York County Volunteer Association currently has a liaison with several agencies that consistently refer clients to us for any number of needs.  As funds provided by these agencies are continually stretched, organizations like The York County Volunteer Association will become primarily responsible for providing families with the basic necessities of food, shelter, and clothing.   In the months and years to come, our mandate to help people in need will become more important than ever.
