Dear Scholarship Committee,
I am honored to be a recipient of the York Retired Teachers Scholarship. Thanks to your generous support, I am the first in my family to attend college. This scholarship has restored my belief that with hard work and dedication, even the most insurmountable obstacles can be overcome.
My particular circumstances, growing up without a father and facing the death of my mother, has not only offered financial and academic challenges, but it has more importantly made me realize the value of a college education.
I plan to begin my undergraduate career as a freshman at Thomas Nelson Community College. My plans at this stage are to complete a two year degree before transferring to William and Mary. The College of William and Mary offers some of the finest programs in the country and I consider myself fortunate to be able to attend.
Working as a volunteer with Special Olympics throughout my high school career, I have enjoyed helping people who were in many ways contending with more challenges than I. I hope to continue to serve, and because of this generous scholarship, I will be better able to help those less fortunate and under-represented.
