An Update on the Artifacts from the Chiskiack Watch Archaeological Collections
Merry Outlaw

As professional cataloging continues on the artifacts from Chiskiack Watch, additional fragments of previously mended vessels continue to emerge.  This 18th century Rhenish stoneware tankard is decorated with a medallion bearing the royal initials GR for George Rex.  Fragments of this stoneware tankard have come from the fill in different areas of the 18th century Lightfoot cellar. They cross mend to the vessel, and give us information about the relationships between different soil layers on the site.

These are just some of the interesting 18th century artifacts from Chiskiack Watch that require conservation to preserve them for future generations.  The key on the bottom is covered with corrosive iron oxide, and untreated, it continues to deteriorate since its excavation in 1989.  On the left of the middle row, a copper weight and a copper strap buckle are shown.  On the right are two lead seals that were closed around textile and stamped.  Although these copper and lead artifacts are more stable than iron, their corrosive salts need to be removed, and they need to be coated with a clear sealant. The knife (top) presents a complicated preservation problem because it is comprised of bone
and iron requiring different treatments.   If left unconserved, the bone handle will continue to split and will eventually fall off.
