Photo Update on the Artifacts from the Chiskiack Watch Archaeological Collections
by Merry Outlaw

Long-time volunteers, l to r, Joe Burke, Cathy Petre, and Marie Hamilton are washing Chiskiack Watch artifacts retrieved during the 1989 archaeological excavations on the bluff overlooking the York River between Ballard and Buckner Streets. Because of their dedication and hard work, we are in the final phase of this artifact processing step. As our longest serving volunteer, Mr. Burke is the volunteer supervisor of this important project.

The unwashed artifacts are first placed in a colander, as illustrated to the right.  Equal attention is given to each fragment, no matter how small or how seemingly insignificant.  The smallest of finds have the potential to yield the most important information about past lifeways.  Consider, for example, the information gleaned about diet from small fish bones and fish scales!

The tray of just washed artifacts shown here includes items such as wrought iron nails, wine bottle glass, animal bones, and oyster shell. All are among the most ubiquitous and numerous of colonial period finds.

                        Museum on Main

Thanks to the generous support of York County and the National Park Service, the old Fife and Drum Building on Main Street is now Museum on Main.  Museum Board Members and the York Ruritans have spent countless hours renovating the building in time for Yorktown Day.  Museum on Main is an extension of the collections in York Hall, so stop by and visit both locations on Yorktown Day.
