Around York County

The York County Volunteer Association
The Bargain Box Thrift Store

Established in 1967, The York County Volunteer Association was formed by concerned citizens as a non-profit organization and has provided continuously services to Hampton Roads citizens since that time. As a young organization with a handful of volunteers, the Association was incorporated in the State of Virginia and is governed by a Board of Directors elected by the volunteers annually at a meeting open to the public. Work is done through committees who report monthly to the Board of Directors.

Over the years, things have changed tremendously. The handful of volunteers has grown to over a hundred dedicated individuals who give their time to help whenever and wherever needed. The yard sales first established to raise money eventually gave way to a small thrift shop established in upper York County.

It had always been our greatest desire to own our very own facility one day, and because of the generosity of many special people, our dream came true. After several years, The York County Volunteer Association purchased land and built a facility to house The Bargain Box. The Bargain Box is now located on Dare Road in Yorktown, VA. The Bargain Box is the arm of The York County Volunteer Association, in that, The Bargain Box actually produces the revenue that the Association uses.

In 2011 we expanded our parking lot and spruced up the building with a coat of paint on the trim and doors. We are very proud of our accomplishments. But there is still so much to do and so many people who need our help. Please take a moment to browse through our site and see if there is some way you can lend a hand to help us in our ongoing mission to care for our neighbors and to help the people of York County and Poquoson.

The operation of The York County Volunteer Association is led by a volunteer Board of Directors. The officers are elected at the annual meeting and the newly elected President appoints the committee chairmen who, together with the officers, make up the Board of Directors.

The York County Volunteer Association Board of Directors provides leadership, communication, and consultations to volunteers. The board posts its monthly minutes and convenes an annual meeting that is open to all volunteers as well as any York County/Poquoson citizen. The Annual Meeting offers the volunteers an opportunity to network, to honor the work of volunteers and to select Board members for the upcoming year.
